Dawn of the Donut

I don't live anywhere near Spokane, Washington, but if I did.... let's just say this business would be my morning stop each day on the way to work.

"Dawn of the Donut" might just be the world's first zombie-themed donut shop, and looks to make "a killing" (did I mention I hate puns?).

Cockney's Vs. Zombies

Well, it looks like London is about to be overrun with undead again! This time around they look to be a little less like "28 Days/Weeks Later" and a little more like "Shaun of the Dead."

As much zombie overdose as the world is getting these days you might roll your eyes at the thought of another, but I have to admit... it looks like it might be pretty cool.

The History of Zombies

Who better to do a zombie history report, than the History channel? I always felt they spent too much time on real world history anyway.

Check out this interesting report by the channel that looks at the roots of the modern zombie and discusses the "what if's" we all fantasize about from time to time. And BONUS! Look for our good buddy and zombie guru, Max Brooks to make an appearance!

Enjoy. Oh, you might want to go potty first. It's an hour and a half.

Beach Attack

One thing I love about the zombie genre is that the amount of stories to be told is endless. Consider how many people there are in the world... you could literally tell a zombie story for each and every one and none of them would be exactly the same.

Here's one of those stories. It's only 90 seconds, but seems totally real. It's ending only brings on more questions, leaving you wondering if they survived, if they enountered more, and how that guy got in the road.

It comes from an interesting site known as Survive Z Day. The website is definitely worth a look as they provide you with tips and information for, well, surviving Z Day. They even sell stuff you could use as you run from the undead!

Comic-Con 2013 Prepares for The Walking Dead

The cast and producers of the greatest show on earth ("The Walking Dead", in case you're new here) will participate in an hour-long panel at Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend! Moderated by Chris Hardwick of "Talking Dead", the panelists will discuss, what else, the upcoming fourth season!

Exactly who will be there you ask? Oh, let's see... how about:

Andrew Lincoln (Rick)
Norman Reedus (Daryl)
Steven Yeun (Glenn)
Lauren Cohan (Maggie)
Danai Gurira (Michonne)
David Morrissey (The Governor)
Chad Coleman (Tyreese)
Scott Wilson (Herschel)

...as well as producer and show-runner Scott Gimple, Exec. Prod. Gale Anne Hurd, Exec. Prod. Robert Kirkman, Exec. Prod. David Alpert and, of course, Exec. Prod. and Special Effects Make-up Supervisor Greg Nicotero!

But wait! There's more! (I know you couldn't hear it, but I was using my Billy Mays pitch voice for that line)

The panel takes place Friday, July 19 at 1:35 - 2:30 p.m. in Hall H, BUT there's also an autograph session on that day at 11:15 a.m. at Booth #4237!! Freakin' sweet, right?

After getting the autographs, and hearing the panel discussion, what could possibly be left to do, you ask? how about "The Walking Dead Escape" at Petco Park, July 19 and 20, 5 p.m. -10 p.m.!

Sounds like an amazing weekend to be a zombie fan, but alas, I cannot be there (someone has to keep an eye on the perimeter for the REAL zombies), so if you make it, could you do your favorite four-eyed photoshop nerd/zombie hunter a solid and beg them to let me be on the show? Muchos Thankos

Want to Hear Something Gross?

There's a new zombie-killin' game out. But unlike it's 4 zillion counterparts, it's actually based on something horrifically awful found in nature.

"The Last of Us" was inspired by a nature documentary. According to Neil Druckmann, who is the creative director for the new game, he was looking for a fresh way to "wipe out humanity" and found it in a BBC documentary series called "Planet Earth", which depicted the freaky effects of the Cordyceps fungus.

The Cordyceps fungus invades its insect hosts, and replaces their insides in order to reproduce itself. Neil says the idea popped into his head almost immediately... "what if they made the jump to humans?"

A scary thought, which might make for a pretty freaky video game! Now if only I had a playstation.

Check out the game trailer below:

Sprucin' Up My New Digs, pt. 2

A few days ago I posted a couple of pictures of original work that will become 2' x 3' posters to adorn the wall of my new office (see the post here). At that time I mentioned a third one that I was working up that glorified the horrific blood-letting and brain-splattering brought forth by Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.

Well, here it is!

I was unsure how best to illustrate my love for those cheesy fright films, and then it hit me... make a film poster for my OWN cheesy fright film!

What'cha think? Would you waste money on this stinker? I know I would, but then I know the guy who designed the poster.

Max Brooks On Being a Zombie Guy

Every zombie fan knows (or should know) who Max Brooks is. The son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, Max has become THE go-to guy in the world of the undead, thanks to his publications and personal appearances. Haven't heard of him? I bet you know his work. The film "World War Z" is based on his bestselling zombie novel of the same name.

I found a great interview with him by Luke Dempsey at USA Today where he answers some questions about those early days of trying to prove himself worthy to horror fans and how much input he had in the "World War Z" film starring Brad Pitt.

Here's a segment:

***

LD: One of your first gigs was writing for Saturday Night Live [2001-2003], for which you won an Emmy. Did you feel extra pressure to be super funny because of your dad and his illustrious comic career?

MB: SNL seems many lifetimes ago. My first sketch was "Superman," and to this day, no one played a better Jor-El than Will Ferrell. As far as winning an Emmy, the truth is that the whole team won and I just happened to be on that team. Congratulating me for winning an Emmy would be like congratulating my father for winning World War II. As far as the pressure of having to live up to my dad's reputation, fortunately there was enough pressure built into that show that I didn't have to bring any with me.

LD: Were you surprised by the reaction to your first book? People took it very seriously--was there any part of you that thought, 'Hey, this is a satire--and a funny one--and y'all think it's real?' Did you intend it to be a slyer book than people realized?

MB: Quite the opposite. My agent, my publisher and, initially, the press thought it was some kind of comic send-up--the witty spawn of Mel Brook's snarky brat. All the time I kept saying, "NO! This isn't satire! I'm really into this! I'm really just a zombie nerd!" It took a long time to prove myself to my real audience, to convince my fellow sci-fi/horror fans that I was one of them. That's why I went to Fangoria and begged them for an interview. That's why I started doing my zombie lectures. Eventually it all paid off. Most people know who I am and what I stand for. Maybe someday Random House will realize that too and get The Zombie Survival Guide out of the damn humor section and put it in sci-fi or self-help, where it belongs.

***

Check out the entire interview at THIS LINK. And while you're at it, check out THIS STORY of how I forced Max to take generously donated to Max one of B'hold Designs' Ultimate Camouflage (the perfect gift for the zombie prepper that has everything)!

Oh! And did I mention I once turned him into a ZOMBIE?

Looking Ahead

We're roughly four months out from the season four premiere of AMC's "The Walking Dead"!! If you're anything like me, you're bouncing up and down with excitement (and the need to pee).

Work on season four has been progressing and they've produced official banner artwork (above)! Looks like a serious zombie party! I'm loving how Daryl is side by side with Rick... that's exactly where he should be, as they are an incredible zombie killing super team. A little like "Batman and Robin", but more like "Batman and Batman."

They've also teased us with the title of the first episode of season four... "30 Days Without an Accident." If the artwork above is any indication, that streak won't last long.

And don't forget! There's a season four preview weekend July 4th - 7th, so tune in. October can't get here fast enough!

Check out this little video of the cast and crew discussing what lies ahead for the new season (contains spoilers of first three seasons):

Sprucin' Up My New Digs

For the first time in my design career, I have an office. It's not big, and true, it has a fire door, but you play the cards you're dealt. For instance, I have labeled my fire door with a "Emergency Zombie Apocalypse Escape Hatch" sign. Now everyone that visits tells me they wish they had one.

Now, about these blank walls...

I'm not the kind of person to go out and buy wall decor... not that there's anything wrong with motivational posters, kitty cats hanging from a tree limb, or velvet Elvis... I just want something a little more personal.. something, that when entering, makes people scrunch up their nose and say "how have you not been fired yet?!"

Yes, I have some zombie artwork, but that's not what I'm all about (seriously, it's not!), so I decided to go with a "favorite movies from my youth" theme.

I love the "Three Amigos" with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short, and pictured is my own design centered around my single favorite quote from that movie. (size 2' x 3')

Also pictured, is my own design for the movie "Aliens" with Sigourney Weaver. This movie might just be my all time favorite. (also 2' x 3')

I'm going to do one more based on the three bad boys of horror - Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. When that's finished I'll post it as well.

Now before anyone gets me in trouble, let me just be clear that I am not selling these. I don't own the copyrights, and they were only made to hang in my office and no where else.

Spoiler Alert: I've got one more idea for a big piece that will go right above my desk, but it will take a while to complete. I'll keep you posted from time to time, but for now know that it will be a glimpse into the twisted mind of a hopeless photoshop nerd. Until then...
